Amherst Inn
Amherst, WI 54406
This bed and breakfast dates back to 1877 and was once a hotel that rose to fame when John Dillinger visited and had lunch there. He was said to leave the waitress a $5 tip (which was a lot of money in that day). The location also once served as a boarding house, a nursing home and possibly even a bordello. The building is believed to be haunted by Philomae 'Mae' Kedrowski, a foul tempered woman and former owner who used to curse like a sailor. Witnesses have claimed to see a diminutive woman standing at the top of the main staircase, and have smelt cigar smoke, along with a scolding woman's voice swearing at them. Doors have also been known to open and close on their own here, objects have moved around by themselves, strange scents and a shadowy figure has been spotted rushing through one of the halls upstairs.
